Today’s motor oil does not provide enough engine protection for car engines designed before the 1990s. Older engines, and those without catalytic converters, need ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) to prevent wear; but with today’s environmental and financial pressures, ZDDP has been removed from modern motor oil.

You can compensate for this by using additive packages. But over time, additive packages deplete. So how do you measure how much ZDDP is left in your oil?
